New cooking gas rates take effect from June 7 as oil companies grapple with rising international energy costs
Households across India will have to pay more for cooking gas from Sunday after domestic LPG prices were revised upward by Rs 29 per cylinder.
With the latest increase, the retail price of a standard 14.2-kg LPG cylinder in Delhi has risen to Rs 942. The revision comes amid continued pressure on fuel retailers due to elevated global energy prices and increasing procurement costs.
Second LPG Price Increase in Three Months
The latest revision marks the second upward adjustment in domestic LPG prices within a span of three months.
Earlier this year, oil marketing companies had raised cylinder prices by Rs 60 as international fuel markets witnessed sharp volatility following geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Despite the latest increase, industry estimates suggest that fuel retailers continue to face significant losses on the sale of subsidised domestic LPG cylinders.
Why Are LPG Prices Rising?
According to industry sources, global energy prices remain elevated, increasing the cost of importing LPG into the country.
State-owned fuel companies are reportedly absorbing a substantial portion of the additional burden rather than passing the entire cost to consumers.
However, continued pressure on procurement costs has made periodic price revisions unavoidable.
Fuel Retailers Still Under Pressure
Industry estimates indicate that oil marketing companies continue to incur large under-recoveries on domestic LPG sales even after the latest revision.
The gap between actual procurement expenses and retail selling prices remains significant due to persistent volatility in international energy markets.
As a result, fuel retailers are balancing consumer affordability concerns with mounting operational losses.
Fuel Price Hikes Extend Beyond LPG
The increase in cooking gas prices comes at a time when other fuel segments have also witnessed revisions.
Petrol and diesel prices have recorded cumulative increases in recent weeks, while compressed natural gas (CNG) rates have also moved higher.
Industry data suggests that oil companies continue to sell several fuels below their actual cost, absorbing a portion of the financial impact.
Important Developments
- Domestic LPG cylinder prices have increased by Rs 29 from June 7.
- The retail rate of a 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi is now Rs 942.
- This is the second LPG price hike in less than three months.
- Oil marketing companies continue to face under-recoveries on LPG sales.
- Rising international energy costs remain the primary reason behind the revision.
- Petrol, diesel and CNG prices have also seen recent increases.
What Does This Mean for Consumers?
For households already dealing with rising living expenses, the latest increase will add to monthly budgets.
The revision directly impacts domestic consumers who rely on LPG for daily cooking needs. While the increase may appear modest on a per-cylinder basis, it could affect overall household expenditure, especially for families with higher consumption.
